7 of the Best Dive Sites in Raja Ampat – The best time to visit

The best time to dive at Raja Ampat is usually between October and May, as during these months, the seas are generally calmer, there’s less chance of rain, and visibility is typically good. I had the opportunity to visit in May, and I was astounded by the remarkable clarity of the water, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Who to dive with

Numerous reputable dive companies and dive resorts are located within the breathtaking Raja Ampat region. The accommodation where you will be residing probably offers access to a dive shop. However, for exceptional diving experiences, consider aligning with some of the top-rated dive companies for unparalleled adventures:

MERIDIAN ADVENTURE—This four-star resort is one of the most popular dive resorts in Raja Ampat. They specialise in dive packages and have excellent knowledge of all the sites. https://raja.meridianadventuredive.com/

PAPUA EXPLORERS RESORT – This dive centre is a great location for advanced open water divers, as a higher level of experience will allow you to explore more of the underwater world and more challenging dives. https://www.papuaexplorers.com/

RAJA AMPAT AGGRESSOR – This live-aboard dive company is perfect for the hardcore divers who want to do it all, more on the pricey side, but it offers the ability to see and dive more than if you were staying at one location. https://www.aggressor.com/destination/rajaampat

KATEMBE PRIVATE ISLAND – This is the resort I stayed at, and lucky for me they have there own dive centre, This is a small resort, and for the majority of my time, I was the only guest which meant that all of my dives that I did was just my dive guide and me.  https://www.katemberajaampat.com

Most places that you stay will have their own dive shop or be in partnership with a dive company, it might be a good idea to send them a message before you arrive and see who they recommend and if they can get you booked in.

7 of the Best Dive Sites in Raja Ampat

Depending on whether you love diving for the fun of it or want to see something in particular will depend on where you want to dive. I was blown away by the diverse marine life of Raja Ampat. I have dived at the Great Barrier Reef and a few other spectacular dive sites, but none compare to the diving I did in Raja Ampat.

Best Dive Sites in Raja Ampat

1. CAPE KRI

This is probably the most popular and most famous dive spot in Raja Ampat, as it holds the record for the most fish species found in a single dive. Entry is only possible via boat and is situated in the channel of water between the Western tip of Pulau Kri and the tiny islet of Koh. Here is a fun little trivia fact for you: Cape Kri holds the world record for the highest number of fish species recorded on a single dive, 374 species, documented by marine biologist Dr. Gerald R. Allen.

Dive Site Overview

  • Location: Northeastern tip of Kri Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia

  • Depth Range: 5 to 40 meters

  • Visibility: Up to 30 meters

2. MELISSA’S GARDEN

This dive site is great for beginner divers as the current isn’t as strong as the other dive sites, and it is also a wonderful site with plenty of colourful corals and many fish species. Melissa’s garden is a great dive site at any time of year, and most people dive this site when they visit Raja Ampat. Melissa’s Garden is situated near Palau Keruwo, in the southeast of the Penemu chain, just west of the Dampier Strait. It is accessible via liveaboard cruises or a 1.5-hour boat ride from Papua Diving Resorts.

Dive Site Overview:

  • Depth: 5–25 meters (16–82 feet)

  • Visibility: Up to 25 meters

  • Currents: Generally gentle, suitable for divers of all levels

  • Best Time to Dive: October to April, when water temperatures range from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F)

3. BLUE MAGIC

This reef is bound to make you emotional. As soon as I entered the water, I was in awe. Blue magic is magic! This is the best place to dive if you want to see large schools of fish, and let me tell you… You want to see large schools of fish. I could have spent all day watching the synchronised schools of fish around me, and there are opportunities to see reef sharks and wobbegongs. This site is one of the most iconic dive spots in Raja as it’s known for its biodiversity.

Dive Site Overview

  • Topography: Submerged pinnacle reef

  • Depth: 7–30 meters

  • Currents: Moderate to strong; reef hooks are often recommended

  • Visibility: Typically 15–30 meters

  • Water Temperature: 27–30°C

  • Best Time to Dive: Year-round; early mornings are ideal to avoid crowds

4. FRIWEN WALL

I am biased when I say this is my favourite dive site of all time, and this is because I got lucky and saw three octopuses changing colours and performing all at once. This was the most incredible moment for me. But you still want to add this to your dive list. The Friwen wall is different from the others, as it is a vertical wall along which you dive. This was a first for me, and it was incredible to see all the beautiful marine life living on this wall. Friwen Wall is one of the best dive sites in Raja Ampat. It is situated between Pulau Friwen and Pulau Friwenbonda in the Dampier Strait. This site is an exceptional diving experience for all levels and experiences.

Dive Site Overview

  • Location: Northern coast of Pulau Friwenbonda, Raja Ampat, Indonesia

  • Dive Type: Wall dive featuring overhangs, coral gardens, and macro photography opportunities

  • Depth Range: 5 to 25 meters

  • Visibility: Typically between 15 to 30 meters

  • Current: Mild to moderate, making it ideal for drift diving

  • Water Temperature: 27°C to 30°C

5. CHICKEN REEF

If you like sharks, then this is the reef for you. It’s not a guarantee, but there are more chances here of seeing full-size grey, black and white tip sharks. Chicken Reef is located on the outskirts of Pulau Kri. It is popular among photographers with both wide-angle and macro opportunities that will make you want to dive this spot multiple times. Depth 5 – 20m, Moderate to strong currents, visibility is good and only accessible via boat.

Dive Site Overview

  • Location: It’s situated between the islands of Kri and Mansuar.

  • Dive Type: Chicken Reef is a vibrant, oval-shaped seamount surrounded by crystal-clear water and home to some of the most biodiverse coral reef systems on Earth

  • Depth Range: 5 – 30+ metres (15 – 100 feet)

  • Visibility: Typically between 15 to 30 meters

  • Current: Intermediate to Advanced Divers as the Current can be strong depending on the tides.

  • Water Temperature: 27°C to 30°C

6. MANTA RIDGE

The name speaks for itself, but this is the reef to dive if you want a chance to see Manta Rays.

Manta Ridge gets its name from the “cleaning station” on top of a shallow underwater ridge, where mantas regularly visit to be cleaned by wrasses and other small reef fish. Divers can secure themselves with reef hooks along the ridge and watch as the mantas glide gracefully just meters away, sometimes looping and circling repeatedly in a mesmerizing underwater ballet.

The currents here can be strong, but they are what bring nutrient-rich water and attract the larger marine life. It’s not uncommon to see multiple mantas at once, sometimes more than a dozen during peak season.

I did see them during my trip in May, so they can be here all year round, but are more common during the warmer months.

Dive Site Overview

  • Location: Dampier Strait, near Mansuar Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia

  • Type of Dive: Drift / Current dive

  • Depth: 10 – 25 meters (33 – 82 feet)

  • Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced (due to strong currents)

  • Best Time to Dive: October to April (peak manta season)

7. SARDINE REEF

A beautiful reef filled with an array of coral and fish species, this is such an enjoyable dive. Good chances of seeing grey reef sharks, barracuda, Spanish mackerel and giant trevallies who like to snack here. Can’t go wrong when diving at Sardine Reef. Depth 5-30m, Moderate to strong currents, good visibility, access via boat.

You really can’t go wrong with whichever dive sites you choose to dive at, they are all amazing and unique in their way and remember that no two dives are the same! You never know what you might get to witness during your dive.

Dive Site Overview

  • Location: Dampier Strait, just off the coast of Kri Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia
  • Depth: 5–30 meters (16–100 feet)–
  • Visibility: 20–30 meters–
  • Current: Moderate to strong – best for advanced divers–
  • Experience level: Intermediate to advanced–
  • Type: Pinnacle reef dive

Tips for Staying in Raja Ampat

1. Choose the location

There are three main options for accommodation:

  • Liveaboards – Best for diving nonstop and reaching remote sites.

  • Dive Resorts – Often located on islands like Kri, Arborek, Gam, and Waigeo. Offer comfort and access to nearby dive sites.

  • Homestays – Affordable and locally run, great for cultural immersion and budget travellers (check the Stay Raja Ampat website).

  •  Tip: Stay near the Dampier Strait (Kri or Gam) for easy access to the best dive sites like Sardine Reef, Cape Kri, and Blue Magic.

2. Plan for Remote Living

  • The Internet is limited or nonexistent on many islands.

  • Bring cash (Indonesian Rupiah) – there are no ATMs on the islands.

  • Pack essentials: reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a dry bag, and reusable water bottles.

3. Respect Local Customs

  • Many islands are home to local Papuan communities. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people.

  • Support eco-friendly lodges and local guides whenever possible.

  • 4. Have Proper Certification

    • Most sites are suited for Advanced Open Water divers due to depth and strong currents. In saying that, I just had my open waters and found it not to be an issue at all.

    • Consider doing a drift diving specialty before you go; it might help if you aren’t a confident diver.

      5. Bring or Rent the Right Gear

      • Bring your own dive computer and reef hook.

      • Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.

      • A 5mm wetsuit is recommended—water is warm (~28–30°C), but multiple dives can chill you. I just went in my swimmers and had no issue if you don’t have the right wetsuit.

This post is all about the best dive sites in Raja Ampat. It’s a must-visit location that I highly recommend to everyone!
