It was recommended to me by a few people to visit. I am happy that I added it to my list, as it turned out to be one of my favourite spots in Mexico. Bacalar’s pristine environment has made it a hub for eco-tourism and sustainable travel initiatives. The lake is also closed to operators every week on a Wednesday for the lake to rest from human impacts. It is still possible to swim during this time, but no other activities are allowed to occur on this day.

Getting to Bacalar is an adventure, as this hidden gem is tucked away in the southern part of Quintana Roo, Mexico. While it may not be as easily accessible as more popular tourist destinations, the journey to Bacalar is well worth the effort.
From Cancun:

- Time: About 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions
- Route: Take Highway 307 south towards Chetumal. Bacalar is located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Chetumal.
By Bus:
- Bus Companies: ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) and other regional bus companies operate services from Cancun to Chetumal.
- Duration: The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours.
- Fare: Prices vary depending on the class of service and time of booking.
From Playa del Carmen:

- Time: About 4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions
- Route: Take Highway 307 south towards Chetumal, then follow signs to Bacalar.

Tips for Bacalar
- Every Wednesday, the lagoon is closed to water activities besides swimming, so if you want to do a boat trip or watersports, it may be best to avoid coming on a Wednesday.
- Sunscreen is not allowed in the lagoon as the chemicals in sunscreen are known to cause harm to the lagoon. Avoid sunscreen and consider other sun protective wear such as hats, long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses.
- Bring enough cash, there are a few ATMs situated in the main square of Bacalar town, but they are known to run out of money sometimes.
- The best time to visit Bacalar is in the dry season from December to April.
