This is your guide to Queenstown!
Before I even made the decision to visit Queenstown, I was inundated with countless enthusiastic recommendations from friends and family assuring me that I would absolutely adore it. And true to their assurances, I found myself captivated by the stunning allure of Queenstown beyond my expectations. Its charm was so compelling that I could envision relocating there if only my beloved parrot could accompany me, and if I could thrive without the necessity of abundant sunlight. My initial encounter with Queenstown was nothing short of magical; as the aircraft soared amidst the encircling mountain peaks cloaked in snow, I couldn't help but be swept away by the breathtaking panorama. Reputed as one of the most spectacular landings globally, this aerial approach is a sight that undoubtedly merits personal witnessing.
Queenstown is the tourist capital of NZ & this is because there are so many incredible things to see and do around area. The best place to stay is right in the heart of it all, Queenstown is very hilly and there is walking to be done but public transport is very easy to access too. We booked a beautiful airbnb and lucky for us there are so many beautiful ones to book! https://www.airbnb.com.au/s/Queenstown--New-Zealand/homes
If you are on a budget and looking for cheaper stays or if you are traveling solo, here are a few of my recommendations.
Absoloot Hostel QT - https://www.hostelworld.com/st/hostels/p/42919/absoloot-hostel-queenstown/
YHA Queenstown Lakefront - https://www.hostelworld.com/st/hostels/p/317183/yha-queenstown-lakefront/
If you are traveling with a group of people then I definitely suggest all chipping in and booking an airbnb, they definitely have the best places to stay in Queenstown.
Things to do!
There are 100s of things to do around Queenstown it’s insane! But here a few of the top things and my favourite things to do around Queenstown.
Take a walk around Lake Wakatipu, enjoy the lake and maybe try some water activities.
Day trip to Glenorchy, just a 45 min drive from Queenstown. This town is small but with a big heart. You can’t miss the iconic red Glenorchy Hut. Plenty of walking trails here too.
Cruise Lake Wakatipu on a vintage steamship to Walter Peak High Country Farm, get to meet the famous Dougal who is a highlander cow. https://www.realnz.com/en/experiences/tours/walter-peak-farm-tours/
Treat yourself to ultimate luxury and book yourself a spa at Onsen hot pools https://www.onsen.co.nz/hot-pool-massage-experiences/
Who doesn’t love a wine tour, why not do a wine tour on bikes! https://www.getyourguide.com/queenstown-l498/queenstown-guided-ebike-wine-tour-5-hours-of-adventure-t394554/?ranking_uuid=d8bde871-98d5-4897-b4c1-bd350eda4a73
When visiting in winter, you will most likely be heading to the snow. Both The Remarkable & Coronet Peak have you covered. You can rent your gear in town or if you are doing classes like I did you can hire your gear on the mountain. If you are a beginner I recommend doing a lesson at The Remarkables https://www.theremarkables.co.nz
If you aren’t traveling around the South Island, definitely do a day trip to Milford Sounds. You won’t regret it at all. https://www.milford-sound.co.nz/tours/
Try something relaxing and different, head to Miller Road Fragrances and book yourself into making your own perfume. https://bookwhen.com/millerroad?location=8tafl34ndx5q#focus=ev-s4y1-20230117103000
Wanting something to do with nature? Head to Conservation At Kiwi Park and learn all about the amazing things they are doing to protect endangered wildlife. https://www.kiwibird.co.nz
Where to EAT
Queenstown is known for its world class restaurants, I would definitely recommend booking a table a few days before as most of the spots we wanted to go to were fully booked! Here are some top places to try:
You must visit Fergburger - https://fergburger.com It is literally what everyone does when in Queenstown. There is a bar, bakery and burger shop. You will have to queue for anything from Fergburger and if you don’t, well count yourself lucky!
Margo’s - This high energy Mexican style restaurant is a real vibe and delicious Mexican food if that is your style. https://www.margos.co.nz
Blue Kanu - I really wanted to go here but it was booked out when I was in Queenstown, its bring together Pacific & Asian cuisine. The food is apparently mouthwatering, please try it for me and let me know what you thought! https://www.bluekanu.co.nz
Vudu Cafe - This cute little cafe on the edge of the lake is the sweetest place to have your morning break. Great food, nice vibe and a good location. What more could you want. https://vuducafe.co.nz/
Fat Badgers Pizza Bar - Because who doesn’t love pizza! Definitely plenty of different pizzas to choose from. Enjoy at the restaurant or take away to enjoy at a location of your choosing. https://fatbadgerspizza.com
