Bacalar, Mexico Travel Guide

Before arriving in Mexico, I knew I wanted to visit Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Tulum. However, I had not heard of a place called Bacalar. It was recommended to me by a few people to visit, and I am very glad that I did add it to my list, as it turned out to be one of my favourite spots in Mexico. The stunning beauty of Bacalar's Lagoon of Seven Colors, coupled with its peaceful atmosphere and charming town, made it a truly memorable and delightful addition to my Mexican adventure.

Bacalar, Mexico Travel Guide

Nestled in the southern part of Quintana Roo, Mexico, lies a serene and breathtaking destination often overlooked by mainstream tourism: Bacalar. In this blog post, we'll delve into what makes Bacalar a must-visit destination for those yearning to explore beyond the beaten path.

Bacalar's most renowned feature is its mesmerizing lagoon, whose shades of blue seem almost surreal. The lagoon gets its name, "Lagoon of Seven Colours," from the varying hues of blue that emerge depending on the depth of the water and the angle of the sunlight. From turquoise to deep indigo, the lagoon's colours dance in harmony, creating a picturesque backdrop that's perfect for relaxation and exploration alike.

Bacalar's pristine environment has made it a hub for eco-tourism and sustainable travel initiatives. Visitors can partake in various eco-friendly activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and birdwatching while supporting local efforts to preserve the region's natural beauty. Additionally, many accommodations in Bacalar are eco-conscious, utilising renewable energy sources and implementing eco-friendly practices to minimise their environmental impact. The lake is also closed to operators every week on a Wednesday for the lake to have a rest from human impacts, It is still possible to swim during this time but no other activities are allowed to occur on this day.

Tips for Bacalar

  • Every Wednesday the lagoon is closed to water activities besides swimming, so if you want to do a boat trip or watersports, it may be best to avoid coming on a Wednesday.

  • Sunscreen is not allowed in the lagoon as the chemicals in sunscreen are known to cause harm to the lagoon, avoid sunscreen and consider other sun protective wear such as hats, long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses.

  • Bring enough cash, there are a few ATMs situated in the main square of Bacalar town but they are known to run out of money sometimes.

  • The best time to visit Bacalar is in the dry season from December to April.
